Sorrento was my favorite place when I came to Italy ten years ago and did not disappoint this time either. It is a beautiful coastal town overlooking the Bay of Naples. From here you have beautiful views of Naples, Isle of Capri, and Mt. Vesuvius.
This is my favorite base for visiting nearby Pompeii, Capri, and the Amalfi Coast. We stayed in Sorrento for three nights and were able to see all of these sights easily. I would recommend spending four nights or more if you have the time because the area is so beautiful you will want more time to explore.
Sorrento is set on cliffs overlooking the Sea. There are gorgeous views everywhere and delicious restaurants serving fresh seafood. Sorrento really comes alive once the sun starts to go down. The place is busy and lively but you will only need one good afternoon to explore Sorrento itself. The rest of the time I would spend seeing the areas around and then coming back to you hotel at night.
We stayed in an awesome hotel that I highly recommend. It is called the Magi House Relais, which we booked through Hotels.com. I like using Hotels.com because you get a free night after every ten nights. Our room slept three people and had plenty of space. We even had a small kitchen and a full size fridge. After exploring all day, this was a great home base to come back to and relax. One night we made dinner in our place and enjoyed having a lazy night in. It does not include breakfast in the nightly rate so we went to a nearby grocery store to stock up on snacks, water, juice, fruit, and pastries. It was cheaper than buying water at restaurants or going out for breakfast and we were so thankful to have that fridge.
On our way to Sorrento from Rome we stopped in Pompeii, so we arrived in town in the evening. You can walk everywhere in Sorrento from the train station, so once we departed our train we started the ten minute walk to the Magi House Relais to check in. We spent the rest of the evening walking around enjoying the views, had dinner at a yummy kebab place, and had an early night so we could be ready for exploring Capri the next day.
